Converting Sewage Water

One option of replenishing depleting groundwater is to convert sewage to tap water. The process involves recycling and treating waste water from our municipal sewer systems to convert it into water that is safe to drink.

Rainwater Harvesting

This is another way that water management services can replenish ground water. This method can only be used during times of rain, though. In rural and urban areas alike, roof top rain water may be conserved and then used to recharge ground water. Raingardens are designed to hold rainwater runoff from patios, driveways, rooftops, and lawns. Many dug wells have dried up or the water levels have significantly declined. These wells may be used as structures in order to recharge the ground water. Tank water, storm water, canal water, and so on, can be diverted into the wells to directly recharge.

The Injection Well Method

This is an artificial replenishing method. The purpose is to augment the ground water storage of an aquifer by pumping in surface water under pressure. Using this method, water is led into the deleted aquifers directly. This is often an effective method since the recharge of ground water tends to be instant and there’s no water loss as a result of evaporation.

Drainage Canals

This is also an artificial replenishing method, where unused drainage canals are turned into temporary reservoirs. The network of surface drains may be modified to collect excess rain water during heavy rain seasons. This is an indigenous method that can help to effectively replenish ground water. Any excess water that is not required for irrigation may be diverted into the unused canals.


Besides the above methods of replenishing ground water, plating and cultivating woody trees can help, too, since the roots help to percolate the rain water deep into the soil, keeping the water levels steady. Not only does the cultivation of trees enrich the quality of water, but it will also raise the ground water table. The trees help to remove, stabilize, transfer, and even destroy contaminants in the soil and ground water, cleaning up sludge, too.
