Prevent them with Plants

There are a number of plants that can be used as natural mosquito repellents, and some of these may be more effective than others. You could plant a selection in your yard and see if they work.

How about planting some citronella? This has long been a favorite insect repellent It is actually used in many natural sprays. Or lavender, which smells wonderful? Grow it inside or outside, or plant some near to the window to keep the mosquitoes out.

Lemon balm is often recommended as a good one to try, and catnip and marigolds can also help to keep mosquitoes at bay. Try them yourself, and even if they do’nt keep the mosquitos away like DEET, they will still smell great!

Make Your Own Repellent

If you prefer the idea of applying a repellent, but you don’t want to use DEET, you have a fewoptions. The first is to buy natural products that do not include DEET, and the second is to make your own.

The internet is full of recipes for homemade repellents, so you will probably have to try a few to see which works.

As the yeast ferments, it releases CO2, and this attracts the mosquitoes. Place it somewhere away from your yard, and replace the solution every two weeks to help avoid mosquito bites, which can lead to a range of illnesses.
