Do More with Less – Ways to a Greener Holiday

The holiday season has long been considered the happiest time of the year. There are gifts, parties, friends and wonderful food that truly encompass the holiday season. While there is plenty of joy during the period, there is also a lot of waste and financial plans go out of hand and make you spending like crazy because of those big sign of Sale and Markdown prices going on around the mall and you end up buying unnecessary things and wake up in the new year with a hangover and more than a dozen charges on your credit card. Do more with less,  Recycling, reusing and being mindful takes just a few minutes out of our holiday fun, but it makes a big difference to the environment.  It is always possible to do less, buy less, cook less and learn more than we expected. Here are some ways to a greener holiday that I personally believe can be a great help for everyone.

Spend Less- Save More

Holiday shopping is a yearly routine but make sure you don’t overdo it. Set a spending limit and make good choices by buying the things you only need.   Don’t get distracted with the sale around you. What I did is buy what I really needed to buy. I make sure that I have my list before going to the grocery.  It is just simple way but save me a lot.    During your shopping or grocery errand, bring your own bags, or reuse old bags to carry your purchases.

It might not seem like a big deal, but the number of shopping bags that are thrown out during the holiday season grows exponentially and I don’t want to add on this garbage and what is more important is I got to have additional points on my reward card for doing so.

More to Cherish – Less on Footprints

Consider e-cards instead of sending out traditional Christmas cards. E-cards use no paper what-so-ever so you’ll keep things green. E-cards can be sent via e-mail to your family and friends. If you must send out traditional Christmas cards, consider printing your own on recycled paper or create it to make it more personalized. If you don’t have the luxury of time, you can always check out cards that are made of recycled paper like this one.

Conservation is very important, as they say, “ less is more”, the more we don’t do and less we used, we are saving.  It is sometimes confusing and I myself was confused on that idea when I heard it the first time but let’s face it, for example, you get to conserve when you walk to a nearby store/mall rather than using your car.  You save on your carbon footprints for not using gasoline and not emitting smoke and you get the chance to live a healthy life.

Travel Less Enjoy More

Use the public transport once in a while. Holiday season is surely a pain in the head, with all the people going out to different place, sometimes you will get too overwhelmed with the traffic. So, if you are going to a near place, why not walk. It can also improve your body circulation and a good exercise to trim the extra weight we will gain for all the holiday foods we ate.  Walking can give a lot of benefit in your body.

Do the things that you can do at home. Holiday means there are chances that you are going to many events. To save time and money instead of going to the salon, do your own foot scrub, face scrub, your own nail polish and your hair and make up if you know how  and  you can also give a massage to your love one. It can save you money and time too.

Decor Less

People will be very busy on buying and creating Christmas decorations thus a lot of footprints would be consumed and did I mention wasting so much money.  Considering that Christmas trees can last for years, using them again will be a great idea.  You can save energy and money.  All you need to do is think of a new theme , if your motif last year is red  then you can go for blue or Gold this year or use your old decorations and add some few innovation to it.  It is all in your imagination but the good thing is you get to save a lot of money.

Would you believe that we have been using the same Christmas Tree for five years? I have a holiday curtains  and matching throw pillows that I used only for the holiday.  Yes, what we do is to clean it and arrange it in a good storage ready for the next Holiday season.  Since you will be using christmas lights means additional energy usage, so make sure to set a time period to use them. Make sure to close them before you go to sleep to avoid accidents.

Less Cluttered Items –  Give More

Remember that your old possession can be someone’s treasure. Give with no other reason but the willingness to give. It has been our practice to gather things, clothes and even toys that we no longer use and give them to the garbage collector for them and their family to use. You can give them to orphanage or typhoon survivors too.

And being a blogger, you get the chance to have free things to review and sometimes given by PR and brands as a token for doing a good exposure on their products. I cannot use them all so I used this extra products as a gift to my friends which means I no longer need to spend for gifts and can also be a good exposure for brands I used since i get to share them with my friends and talk about how they made impact in my life.

Give Kids Less to Learn More

Sometimes we wanted to pamper our kids the things we haven’t done or receive when we are at their age.  That’s why, we tend to spend too much on toys, clothes, gadgets.  This is the time to get the idea that having many things can bring your children happiness is not entirely true, true happiness is doing more on physical things not material things.  Things that really matter is the family, sharing times and bonding together. These are free of charge and can make your life more happy. Less stuff means more time with the family and this holiday vacation is a great opportunity to use it.

Turn Trash to Treasure

This is the time when children get to receive gifts from family, friends and their God parents. It is also the time to bond with our children. One way of bonding with them and teaching them to turn trash into treasure is to create projects like this treasure box that my daughter did.

Cook more – Less Calories

Yes, cooking your own food for the family this Noche Buena and Media Noche does not just save you money but can also help you and your family to cut on calories. When you eat out, you get to spend too much but if you prepare your own meals, you can give them healthy foods.  Sometimes, you might say that it can be stressful doing the grocery and preparing the foods but it can also be the best time to teach your children to help you and teach them your signature dish.

Use kitchen appliances that are energy efficient.  Eco friendly kitchen appliances gadgets like ovens, kitchen ranges,  cooker, refrigerator can save you money and help the environment too.

The decision of going green starts with you.  When you embrace the fact that our environment needs your help, that’s the time you will eventually realize that going green is something worthy and not just because it’s a cause that you usually see in televisions and other social media. It’s not like your favorite movie or song that you can just jump in with the bandwagon and join in with the fun.

I believe that being green just not stop with our thoughts but needed our actions to be able to live a more sustainable life that we all longed for. There are thousands tips on how you can live a greener life and choosing the right gadgets for energy savings but it starts on having the right attitude.  Each of us see this on a different way and what good for us might not be for others. So, it is entirely up to us to do what we think is best for our family, choosing the best efficient things and keeping in thoughts the help we can give to Mother Earth.  I think more people needs to invest on making small changes every day, it will be hard but it’s worth a try.

Remember that LESS IS MORE! The less you consume footprints, the more you give back to the environment.  Be considerate and make an effort to be less wasteful. I believe that living a greener life does not need a special time or day, you can achieve it if you have it in your heart and you live it with you everyday.  Give more love and you will receive more, appreciate more and your life will have less worry.
