What are the Most Popular Houseplants for Beautiful Flowers and Foliage?

If you’re going to spend a significant amount of money on flowers for your home you want them to make the area look amazing. A major part of having plants in your home is the color they will bring.

So what are the best plants to invest in if you want an amazing display and how can you choose a selection of plants that will mean you’ll have great decoration throughout the year?

The tropical hibiscus

If you want a touch of the tropics in your home, the hibiscus is the way to go. It’s famous for its huge blooms which come in a variety of colors including red, pink, orange, white and blue. The flowers don’t last very long; approximately a couple of days once they are in full bloom.

This is made up for by the fact that the flowering season lasts from late spring right through to fall and sometimes even into winter. If you are keeping hibiscus you need to make sure that the soil is kept evenly moist and that the plant is given as much indoor light as possible, especially if you want the blooming period to last for a long period.

The striking oxalis

This plant is a very popular gift for St Patrick’s Day, with its shamrock like leaves. These leaves can be green or a very eye catching deep purple. The oxalis doesn’t just have amazing foliage it also has an almost constant show of pale pink flowers. This lovely, looking houseplant likes a medium to bright light and moderately moist soil. It grows from bulbils which are easy to split up if the pot becomes crowded.

The scent of a jasmine

If you want a houseplant that has an incredible scent, as well as an amazing look, the jasmine is a really good choice. This delicate plant, that loves bright light and an evenly moist soil, bears an array of pale pink or white flowers and has an aroma that is unmistakable.

The winter blooms of a kaffir lily

If you want to have some color in your home during the winter as well as during the spring and summer, the kaffir lily is an excellent choice. This plant likes cooler temperatures with medium light and barely moist soil. It makes for a striking decoration with its clusters of approximately 20 orange/ red flowers on long green stems. One important point you need to be aware of if you’re considering purchasing a kaffir lily is that they are poisonous and can make young children and pets ill if they ingest them.

No excuse for a dull home

You can see that there’s plenty of choice when it comes to plants to brighten up a room. One of the most important things is to plan wisely. If you do this you should be able to ensure you have a splash of color all year round. Remember to make sure you buy plants you have time to care for and that are suitable in your home if you have pets or young children. So, what do you think are the most popular house plants?
