Saving the Planet: Here are Some Tips on How You Can Make Your Website Go Green

Everything and everyone is going green nowadays and it is not a passing fad. The future of the planet is at risk now more than ever before but it is not too late to make up for past mistakes.

Even the Internet?

All the industries are going green as is the Internet. Why? Because recent report reveals that a single Google search requires the same amount of energy it would require to bring a whole cup of water to the boil. I won’t go into the details of how, but you can see there is need to make the Internet more energy efficient and environmentally friendly.

What can I do?

While you are not responsible for the entire Internet, you can do something so that at least your website will be more eco-friendly:

1. Choose eco-friendly hosting

Servers consume lots of energy so as to continue running 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. By choosing web hosting that is conscious of the environment; you will have done a lot to help the environment.

Here is what a green hosting provider should typically be:

• The servers should be powered by ‘green’ and renewable energy

• The servers should be design to be energy efficient

• The company should subscribe to environmentally friendly procedures

• It should offset its energy use by making use of carbon credits and renewable energy credits.

2. Offer incentives to your subscribers

This is one of those ‘two birds with one stone’ situations. You can increase the number of followers and subscribers by offering eco-incentives for every subscription. This could be anything from planting a tree per subscription to offsetting a certain amount of carbon dioxide. You can be as creative as you want with this.

3. Offsetting your sites carbon usage

Register with companies that will offset energy usage by giving to a program that will either get rid of greenhouse gases or add energy that is renewable into the grid for your usage of non-renewable energy.

This may not completely remove your carbon footprint but it is a step in the right direction. You could even get more people visiting your website as a result.

4. Donate part of your profits to environmental programs

Many programs out there are trying to make a difference with regard to the environment. You can give a percentage of profits from your website to these programs to fund their activities around the world. Just make sure they are credible first, alright?

5. Talk about it

As a website owner, you already have an audience. You can use your website as a platform to get the message out regarding the environment. Within your posts and article, you can weave in tips on how to decrease negative impact on the environment in homes and offices. You can also add links to sites and resources that could help your audience with green living. Since you have the power of information, use it wisely. So you see; through these simple methods, even you can implement to better our world.
