In recent years the fuel economy of a cars has been the first thing prospective customers search for. With austerity set to continue for a while, budgets have come under increasing pressure so any savings that can be made are welcome. Car Shop has also reported an increase of buyers looking for more economical cars. So here is our list of the top 10 most fuel efficient cars, by way of an added bonus, many of the cars appearing in the list have emissions so low that they will be exempt from congestion chargers.

Vauxhall Ampera/Chevrolet Volt

The European Eclectic Car of the Year 2012, this car combines electric-drive with an electricity generator powered by petrol. Free from distance restrictions usually associated with electric power it offers a stunning 235.4 mpg.

Toyota Prius Plug-In

A standard Prius equipped with additional batteries that when charged from mains supply give extra range before the engine has to engage resulting in a combined consumption figure of 134.5 mpg.

Fisker Karma

Its 2.0- litre engine acts as a generator to re-charge the on-board lithium-ion batteries. Producing 397 hp with a 0-60 figure of 6.3 seconds and a claimed mpg figure of 62.4 it combines performance and economy.

Toyota Yaris Hybrid

The combination of a 1.5- litre engine and electric motor drivechain allow this model to return 80.7 mpg.

Renault Clio 1.5 dCi 90 ECO

Fitted with a 1.5- litre diesel power unit that returns 88.3mpg makes this a serious contender in the super-mini range.

Hyundai i20 1.1 CRDi Blue

The i20 supermini uses the fuel efficient 1.1- litre three cylinder diesel engines that boast figures of 88.3mpg. Their prices remain one of the most competitive on the market

Kia Rio 1.1 Ecodynamics

This five door supermini is both roomy and practical and is said to have the most economical conventional engine in the world that offers 88.3 mpg.

Smart Fortwo cdi

For many years the most economical for sale in the UK, fitted with a diesel power unit it still gives an impressive 85.6mpg. Its main drawback remains that it only can seat two.

Peugeot 208 1.4 e-HDi 70 EGC

Fitted with very efficient 1.4-litre e-HDi engine which limits its fuel consumption to a very respectable 83.1mpg, aided by a very good stop-start system.

Citroen C3 1.4 e-HDi 70 Airdream EGS

Their most fuel efficient supermini to date with a 1.4 diesel engine giving a pleasant 83.1mpg, also fitted with automatic gearshift as standard.
